Das Volvo Ocean Race 2008/09 startet am 4. Oktober in Alicante und führt die acht Teams in Neun Monaten über Kapstadt, Kochi, Singapore, Quigdao, ums Kap Horn nach Rio de Janeiro, Boston, Galway, Goteborg und Stockholm nach St. Petersburg wo das Rennen ende Juni beendet wird.
Eine Neuheit in diesem Jahr ist der Mobile Channel von Ericsson. Ericsson, das auch im Wettbewerb mit 2 Booten beteiligt ist, hat es ermöglicht das Rennen übers Handy zu verfolgen. An board jedes Bootes ist ein Media-Crew Mitglied und liefert Videos, Fotos, Podcasts und Feature Stories.
